Versatile use
The areas of work

Many wheels interlock to ensure efficient tax administration: Our fully qualified lawyers in the higher civil service work as field and office managers in tax offices, e.g. in tax investigations, the appeals office or assessment, they manage tax offices or units in the Chief Finance Directorate and the Ministry of Finance.

They organize work processes, coordinate personnel assignments and manage projects. In doing so, you will communicate at eye level with politics and business - whether during tax audits, briefings or negotiations.

Your start
The first year

You will take on a responsible position in the tax office right from the start. We will prepare you for this in theory and practice in a 12-month trainee program (introductory period):

You will get to know different areas in the tax office (four months), the senior tax office (one month) and the tax audit department (three months).

Your practical experience will be supplemented by a postgraduate course at the Federal Finance Academy in Brühl. Here you will acquire the tax law foundation for your varied work. You will also have the opportunity to exchange ideas with other newcomers. A clear advantage is the work on skills that you will need for your management function. After the first year, you will take on a management position in the tax office (head of department), depending on your personal inclinations and interests.

Your perspective
A systematic career

Performance pays off: Your possible career path in tax administration is structured over five stages.

  1. You will receive 12 months of practical and theoretical training. During this induction period, you will take over a specialist area in a tax office.
  2. You will work in the tax office and pass through stations at the Chief Finance Directorate or the Ministry of Finance.
  3. You will become a consultant at the Chief Finance Directorate or the Ministry of Finance.
  4. You will head a tax office or a department in the Directorate General of Finance.
  5. You will head a department in the Directorate General of Finance or a unit in the Ministry of Finance.

In addition to the classic activities in the tax administration, you will have other exciting opportunities:

  • representing the state in Berlin or Brussels
  • working at the Federal Fiscal Court
  • teaching at the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration and Finance
  • after several years of experience, a judgeship at the tax court

You could also consider working at the State Statistical Office, the State Office for Remuneration and Pensions or the State Property and Building Administration.

Even if there are various paths open to you, the basic principle is always the same: Those who prove themselves are recommended for higher positions.
